Is AI Builder This Scary? My Frustrating Experience with Lovable

I tried building an app with AI, but it broke with just small changes... Sharing my real experience and thoughts on the current state of AI builders.

I heard that 'you can easily build apps with AI!' and decided to give it a try, but it turned out to be more challenging than I expected 💭

For example, there's this AI builder called 'Lovable,' but even after trying five times, I've never managed to create a properly working app 🥺

At first, I thought 'Hey, this might work...'

I tried to build a simple app with just user registration and a few basic pages.
The first draft looked pretty good, and I was hopeful... but that's when the nightmare began 😳

A small change messes everything up

I added a new input field to a form and checked the preview, only to find...

  • The layout completely messed up
  • Buttons stopped working
  • Errors appeared in backend processes I hadn't even touched

I was completely lost... and totally lost confidence 💦

Starting over multiple times didn't help

Thinking 'Maybe I made a mistake?', I started new projects from scratch, but the same issues kept happening. I became afraid that everything would break with every edit 😂

It felt like 'dominoes that fall just from breathing' - I got scared to even make small adjustments 🥲

Is this what AI build tools are like right now?

Honestly, I'm starting to think that 'building a properly working app easily with AI' might still be difficult at this point.

Of course, it probably varies by service, but...
Complex apps still need human hands, and it seems small changes can affect the entire system ✨

So what should we do? My small ideas

  • Start with something extremely simple 🔧
  • Make changes gradually, checking functionality frequently 📌
  • When it gets too difficult, it's okay to ask for help from someone more experienced 🧠

Trying to achieve perfection will just exhaust you, so I think it's better to treat them as 'fragile things' for now and adjust your approach accordingly 🌸

I believe AI builders will continue to evolve, but for now, the 'fear of everything breaking when you touch it' seems to persist.
If anyone else is struggling with the same issues, I hope you don't push yourself too hard and give yourself some breathing room 🥰✨

LLMs don't have intelligence, they're just token generators, so they're better for small tasks than app building, but they're still frustrating.

If you're a programmer, you quickly understand the limitations of AI builders, so I think most no-code advocates are either building simple apps or just fishing for attention.

You're finally starting to understand, congratulations!

Ataror of Kingston

AI builders are useful for getting started, but customizing individual features often leads to disappointment even with explanations.

Ataror of Luis

If AI could do everything, we wouldn't need developers, but reality isn't that sweet.

Ataror of Nolan

ノーラン

Don't believe CEOs who say 'Now everyone is a programmer.'

Ataror of Robert

ロバート

That sounds really tough, if you're stuck with AI builders, going back to basics might help - hang in there!

Ataror of Kingston

グレース

Lovable and Bolt are good for prototyping and validating ideas, but not for production use.

Ataror of George

ジョージ

I've had experiences where I asked AI for simple functions and got terrible results - I was much better off building it myself. Using AI for debugging and UI creation is more realistic.

Ataror of Brooklynn

ハンナ

Don't expect it to work perfectly like in advertisements.

Ataror of Caleb

クロエ

This is a skill issue - I have 8 years of experience but always start hobby projects with Loveable and similar tools.

Ataror of Nolan

ノーラン

There's no magic that builds entire apps in one shot, and if that were possible, it would indicate poor design.

Ataror of Christian

クリス

The trick is to break things down into small functional units and progress step by step from types to database design, mutations, and display components.

Ataror of Kimberly

キンバリー

Maybe it's time to learn coding - you'll have more freedom and confidence that way.

Ataror of Kingston

グレース

AI code generation is fine initially, but it struggles with state management as projects grow.

Ataror of Luis

リリー

How do you manage a 10-person team developing with just prompts, with the entire codebase being refactored every time? That's the core problem.

Ataror of Aidan

エイダン

That's why I start with vibe-coding and then transition to other tools.

Ataror of Sophia

マックス

If you want to improve, research E2E testing platforms and read about experiences from people who've actually struggled.

Ataror of Sadie

サム

Otherwise, you'll just end up with an angry manager or become a manual tester yourself, with no real efficiency gains.

Good luck!
